Cline’s Heating and Air is a veteran- and woman-owned HVAC leader serving Spokane and North Idaho since 1988. Founded by the Cline family on a bedrock of integrity and a promise to “fix what others only replace,” Cline’s has built deep community roots and a reputation for top-tier workmanship.
The Boston family acquired Cline’s in May 2024, tripling the company’s size in the first year while preserving its vision, mission, and core values. That growth was built through disciplined leadership, a strong company culture, and a clear understanding that the right people are the foundation of long-term success.

At Cline’s, hiring is about more than finding someone who looks good on paper. Technical experience matters, but a strong team is built on much more than certifications, job history, and a list of skills. The right person must also meet our hiring standards, including a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, alignment with our core values, and the ability to work well in a team environment.
What We Do
Cline’s Heating and Air provides expert residential and commercial HVAC service, installation, retrofitting, repair, and maintenance for a wide range of mechanical systems throughout Spokane and North Idaho. Our experience includes systems for conditioning indoor air, including heating, cooling, humidification, and dehumidification equipment.
This includes electric and gas heating systems, cooling systems, humidification equipment, heat pumps, furnaces, rooftop units, ductless mini-splits, water-source heat pumps, VRF zoning systems, chillers, boilers, ductwork, unit heaters, cooling towers, pumps, controls, and exhaust fans.
Cline’s repairs failed equipment, replaces and installs new equipment, modifies airflow systems for tenant improvements, and maintains equipment to help extend the life of each asset. We also service and repair all brands and install most brands, though we do not service or install oil appliances.
This wide range of work requires a team that is technically capable, dependable, adaptable, and committed to doing the job right. That is why Cline’s hiring standards are closely aligned with the company’s mission, vision, and core values. The work is demanding, the expectations are high, and the people behind the service matter just as much as the systems being maintained.
Our Mission, Vision, and Core Values

The company is building a team of people who believe in doing excellent work, supporting one another, serving customers well, and growing together. That starts with the mission, vision, and core values that guide every part of the company.

A Culture Built Around Growth, Accountability, and Teamwork
At Cline’s, culture is not treated as an afterthought. It’s something the company takes seriously and actively protects. Because team members spend so much time working together, Cline’s is intentional about hiring people who not only have the right skills but also the right mindset, attitude, and values.
That commitment begins with a three-part interview process designed to bring true winners into the company. The goal is not just to fill a position, but to ensure each new hire has the potential to strengthen the team, contribute to the company’s mission, and grow within the organization.
Once someone becomes part of the Cline’s team, growth remains a priority. The company uses PPF planning, which stands for Personal, Professional, and Financial goals, to help map out each team member’s future. This approach helps leadership understand what success looks like for each person, because for Cline’s Heating and Air to win, its people need to win too.
The team also meets monthly to share ideas, work through challenges, recognize progress, and celebrate wins. That open communication helps keep everyone aligned and connected to the bigger picture.
The company believes a strong culture should include real connection and fun. Team events such as rodeos, hockey games, BBQs, hunting trips, and other activities help build relationships beyond the daily work environment. Every team member has a clear career path, room to grow, and the full support of an organization that truly values its people.
The 4 C’s of Cline’s Hiring Standards
Cline’s uses the Four C’s as part of its hiring standards: Character, Commitment, Compatibility, and Competence. These four qualities help the company evaluate candidates more thoroughly and look beyond the resume to understand better whether someone has the potential to contribute to the team, serve customers well, and support the long-term culture Cline’s is building.
1. Character
When Cline’s looks at character, the focus is on who the candidate is as a person, not just what they can do as a worker. Do they show honesty, accountability, humility, and respect? Do their values align with the way Cline’s serves customers and supports its team?
In the HVAC industry, character matters every single day. Technicians are invited into homes, businesses, and job sites, where customers trust them to be professional, respectful, and honest. That trust starts with the people we hire.
Candidates with strong character tend to be dependable, responsible, and willing to do the right thing even when no one is watching. They take ownership of their work, communicate clearly, treat coworkers with respect, and help create a positive work environment. They are also less likely to create unnecessary drama because they understand the importance of teamwork, integrity, and professionalism.
In the hiring process, character is one of the clearest indicators of how someone will serve customers, support the team, and represent Cline’s Heating and Air with professionalism and integrity.
2. Commitment
Cline’s is looking for people who want to grow with the company, contribute to its success, and build a future in the trade. The company is not simply looking for a short-term fill. It is looking for candidates who want to be part of something bigger and who are ready to invest in their own growth.
Commitment matters because replacing employees is costly, not only financially, but also in terms of morale, workflow, scheduling, training, and team stability. A committed employee brings consistency to the workplace. They show up, follow through, keep learning, and take pride in being part of the team.
During the hiring process, we want to understand what motivates a candidate and what they are looking for in their career. Questions such as “Where do you see yourself in three years?” or “What motivates you to stay with an employer?” help reveal whether someone is simply looking for a job or looking for a place to grow.
At its core, commitment is about more than job stability. It is about demonstrating drive to improve, a willingness to contribute to a team, and a desire to build a long-term career in an industry that depends on trust, skill, and reliability.
3. Compatibility
A candidate may have strong skills and good experience, but if they do not fit the company culture, the partnership may not work well for either side. Compatibility is about how well a candidate fits within the work environment, team structure, communication style, and company values.
At Cline’s, professionalism, teamwork, respect, accountability, and a strong customer-first mindset all matter. A compatible candidate is someone who can adapt to that environment and contribute positively to it. This doesn’t mean everyone has to have the same personality.
Strong teams often include people with different strengths, backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Compatibility means the person can work well with others, communicate respectfully, handle feedback, and support the company’s overall goals.
When compatibility is strong, the entire team benefits. Communication improves. Productivity increases. Team members are more likely to support each other, solve problems together, and maintain a healthier work environment.
Customers can feel that difference too. A team that works well together is better equipped to provide consistent, professional service. Compatibility helps ensure new hires can succeed in their role while strengthening the culture Cline’s has worked hard to build.
4. Competence
At the end of the day, a strong candidate must be able to do the job or have the right foundation and willingness to be trained.
In HVAC, competence includes technical knowledge, mechanical skills, problem-solving ability, safety awareness, and adherence to proper procedures. Depending on the position, it may also include customer communication, diagnostic ability, installation experience, maintenance knowledge, or familiarity with specific equipment and tools.
A competent individual can contribute with confidence. They understand the importance of quality workmanship, safety, and doing the job correctly. They can follow instructions, learn from experienced team members, and apply their knowledge in real-world situations.
Competence doesn’t always mean knowing everything on day one. It means having the ability and attitude to keep learning. The HVAC industry is constantly evolving, driven by new equipment, technologies, efficiency standards, and customer expectations.
A strong candidate is someone who can grow with the trade and continue improving over time. Competence ensures every team member is prepared to uphold Cline’s standards, support customer trust, and deliver quality work in the field.
Why the 4 C’s Matter
The Four C’s help Cline’s Heating and Air make hiring decisions that go beyond technical qualifications alone. By considering character, commitment, compatibility, and competence together, the company can identify candidates who are not only capable of doing the work but also aligned with its culture, standards, and long-term vision.
A great hire strengthens the entire organization. The right person improves team morale, supports better customer service, reduces turnover, and helps protect the professional reputation Cline’s has built throughout Spokane and North Idaho. In a service industry built on trust, every team member plays a role in shaping the customer experience.
That is why the Cline’s hiring process goes beyond the resume. We are looking for exceptional people who care about their work, respect their coworkers, serve customers well, and take pride in representing Cline’s Heating and Air. If that sounds like you, we want to hear from you.
